Our Mission
The Tangier Island Mission Trip is a God-Inspired, safe and timely effort to help others, draw nearer to our Lord, to the mission team, and to the people of Tangier Island on a productive and fun one-week trip. During the trip we aim for several objectives:
- Enable living on the island to be safer, dryer and warmer for the many who need help with their homes through small construction and repair projects at no cost to the residents.
- Show the people they are not forgotten or alone by outreach, visitation, and community events designed to bring us together through our many planned and unplanned engagements.
- Demonstrate the love of Christ and what it means to be in a Christian Community by acting as an integrated team serving Him, the people of the Island, and each other.
How it Started
The Mission Team was formed in 2014, and the first trip to Tangier Island was in June of 2015. The approach of the team has always been two-handed: spiritual outreach through building relationships in Christ, and physical improvement through light construction projects. We let the people know they are not forgotten while keeping their homes safer, drier, and warmer.
Since then, the team has served on Tangier or Smith Islands throughout the years. Oftentimes, the team travels to the islands throughout the year with smaller teams of 5-10 going in the Spring and Fall, with the main team of 20-60 going in the Summer. During the Winter, the team supports the Holly Run, an aviation-themed Christmas Event where 50 small general aviation aircraft deliver holly to the homes of Tangier Island, along with relief supplies and monetary donations to our mission team for construction.

The team is formed from 8-14 churches per year from Central Pennsylvania. Each person raises their own funds, as this is a 100% self-funded effort blessed by the Lord. People who serve range in age from 10 to 75, and no experience or skills are required. In fact, this mission team accepts people with many disabilities, and we all serve where the Lord has a place for us. The best ability is availability, and all who serve contribute in meaningful ways to the many efforts for every age group across Tangier and Smith Islands.
